Someone should make a database of every “photo enhancement” scene in a movie or TV show.

And measure how realistic it is?
“And here I shall use some magical photoshop filters that look like adding scanlines that no one else has!”
Oh, dear god. Merely a list of all movies and TV shows containing such scenes would suffice, would it not?
I mean, listing individual scenes would mean at least one entry for every CSI:whatever episode ever. Terrible, lazy writing.
Speaking of lists: in your next-gen column (which I would link if the server was not currently having a seizure), you mentioned something about there being a dozen or so ultimately worthwhile GBA games. I assume your are restricting your count to substantively original games, thus sidestepping port and sequel glut. This got me think: what is that dozen? Seriously! My list so far:
Astro Boy: Omega Factor
CV: Aria of Sorrow
Metroid Fusion
M&L: Superstar
Advance Wars
WarioWare (also maybe WarioWare Twisted?)
I’ve not yet played Gunstar Super Heroes enough to make judgement on it, nor do I have any real experience with those original platformers Nintendo released, such as DK: King of Swing and Mario vs DK.
And! Speaking of Next-Gen, am I really to believe that there could be another Famitsu-reading writer with the surname of Rogers who would pepper his commentary with his own interview quotes and personal details?
What, you’ve seen a realistic one?
I know I’ve seen at least one show one time somewhere that didn’t assult my sensibilities as a graphic designer. I think it had to do with survelance footage.
I would love to see one where the guy’s like, ‘Well, I can up the contrast so we can see a little more.. and do an unsharp mask or edge enhancement, but zoom in on the rear view mirror to see a clear picture of the killer’s reflection, what’ve you been watching, CSI?’
And add up the number of unnecessary beeping noises?
I don’t know! I originally wrote “half a dozen”, though I figured I might have missed something. You’ve named everything obvious. And yes, those are the general rules. I guess maybe you could throw in the rest of the Metroid and Castlevania crowd, though that would be repetitious. Possibly something Fire Emblem-related, though I’ve not really played those games.
Surely there can’t be more than a dozen of the things.
Even counting videogame movies and The Wizard.
It would be a nice companion to the database of “password cracking” scenes that they could also make.
Yes, WarioWare Twisted would be on that list right along with the original.
I saw that, sort of! My mother was watching it while I wandered around playing Phoenix Wright. I’m not sure which I think is more realistic.
I played the first NA-released GBA Fire Emblem. Everything I’ve heard about older games of that series has basically suggested that the GBA Fire Emblems are just like Fire Emblem on any other system — a different plot, different setting, but really the same game. So … should it be counted for being the first one released here? Hard to say. I suppose NA and Japanese releases should be treated independently; for the same reason that Gyakuten Saiban won’t show up on a “notable [English] GBA games” list, Fire Emblem probably should.
I’m doing a Masters in engineering (somewhat) in image processing. So … yeah. It also offends me on professional grounds. (As does Numb3rs.)
They could at least have fun with the dialog:
“Well, I could try to using a homomorphic filter with a Wiener Extension, but … I can’t perform miracles.”
I always think of Blade Runner as being the canonical example of this.
I’m not sure whether it’s the first or not.
there’s a great scene in “super troopers” that parodies this.
FYI!!!
The example from Blade Runner is especially excellent, as it is an example not only for image enhancement but also for speech recognition/natural-language processing.
