I just realized that Obama is sort of a living Internet meme. Everyone feels like he discovered Obama for himself, like All Your Base or rickrolling, and is on some irrational level surprised when he learns that other people also know about it. It’s sort of like the Hamster Dance got elected president. How did that happen?

No, he is the real-life equivalent of an Internet meme!
Um! Maybe! I still don’t think that analogy works! Obama’s fame didn’t spread virally, it spread because he’s on every major news network 24/7 and on the front of every paper. That and he has a multi-million dollar advertising campaign. If you want to make pop culture phenomenon analogies, Obama’s closer to like, Star Wars or something than he is The Hamster Dance.
It kind of did, for a while. I still think of him as that obscure guy at the DNC in 2004.

I think you’ll find that most people didn’t know about him until his campaign began in earnest, however
That’s the key. He came out of nowhere and got a national platform at the 2004 convention, and everyone who saw him then felt like they’d just seen the next big thing that most people didn’t know about. Yet it was still national TV.
