John Brandon:
: Zarlor Mercenaries was an excellent and impressive top down shooter for the Atari Lynx.

: For some reason, I was still playing it in the mid-late 1990s and wanted to make a sequel to it.

: A cool thing about Zarlor is that it had a choose character screen. Since I loved making graphics, I went hard at work at making a TON of characters for this game, even creating a fairly graphically impressive choose character screen.

: I tried to give each character a distinct look and personality, and of course they would all have different ships too! And as a bonus, I even started working on a 2 block tall "4 player" ship - which was going to have so many controls scattered haphazardly throughout the keyboard, that 4 players would be necessary to be a crew to control the ship.

: At any rate, the game was never fully integrated with all the graphics and levels and choose character screen I worked on - rather I would make individual tech demos to get some instant gratification and see how the levels and whatever new character I was designing looked when put together.

: I think there were over 3 or 4 levels created which you could probably see if you look at each of the tech demos.

: However unlike most shmups, it was difficult to find a way to end the level. Most shmups end based on a timed event like a boss fight, but I didn't know how to do anything like that in GM, so you just fly around a repeating level, dodging and shooting at enemies which mostly have an AI which tells them to go forward. I have no idea where the exits in the levels are.
If you actually got this game to work, here are some instructions.

1. Controls:

Controls are as follows:

The numeric keypad is a big help in this game,
* by pressing diagonal right you do an olley towards the right and vice versa.
* By pressing the right key you move right and vice versa.
* By pressing up you do a very low to the ground olley. (The low olley is never really needed)

Some tricks are:
* insert = board slide
* Enter = 5 0 Grind (Hint. Do on rails)
* + = spin
* * = kickflip
* - = nosebone

(Other tricks will be added after being suggested)

Please tell me about comments our questions on this program. Give me ideas for levels.
John Brandon:
: I liked skateboarding. I played Sega's Top Skater in an arcade and wanted to make a skateboarding game.

: This is basically a 2D platformer with a character on a skateboard. This concept would be expanded on in a much more interesting way in Skatenig.
Story
Once, there was a penguin
who went by the name of
I. Dont Know. He was a
very well educated penguin,
and a smart one at that.

For those who know their
history, the great war
between the penguins, and
the lobsters. At the time
when I. Know was inventing
his INSTA-FLIP ray, the
evil cave lobsters were
preoccupied with taking
over the great city of
Penguinsburg.

Late one evening, as I.
Dont Know was putting
fresh polish on his ray
gun, he was startled out
of his menial task by a
thumping at his door.
"Who is it?" He called.
Only a faint bubbling
sound could be heard, the
same sound, coincidentally,
that a long-bearded-cave-
-lobster made. He opened
the door, shot the lobster,
went back inside and ate a
health-fish or two. Then,
he leapt out the door, and
locked it before he could
change his mind. When he
looked outside, he decided
that he shouldn't have done
that, and that it was a
very, very bad idea. With
very bad timing on his side,
he found that he had lost
his keys already. "This,"
he told himself,"is a quest
through very dangerous land,
in search of my keys???".
He then agreed with himself
on that point and started
on his search for his keys.

Instructions
Okay, to move UP, DOWN,
LEFT, or RIGHT, you should
press the corresponding
on the arrow keys.

The next step is shooting.
To shoot your Flip ray,
you should either press

* T For up,
* G For down,
* F For left, AND
* H For right.

/\/\OR/\/\

There is a special cheat
mode that lets you fire
faster, quicker, and with
more power. I doubt that
a person who didn't make
this awesome game could
find it out, so here it
is....

Background
John Brandon:
: You are a penguin and you shoot lasers at lobsters. The lobsters were inspired by Peach the Lobster, and a stuffed lobster I had as a kid, that I actually named "Peach" in reference to the Peach the Lobster character. I think the penguin graphics are ripped from another GM game.
