Plant seeds; watch them grow; reap the resulting wheat.

Use number keys to move, "space" to plant seeds, and "enter" to harvest.

You start off picking up one packet of seeds. Plant them to grow one stalk of wheat. Watch it grow. Harvest that to get two piles of seeds. Plant them to grow two stalks of wheat. Watch them grow, then harvest them to get four piles of seeds. Repeat this process, getting more and more seeds and wheat. Once you've gotten 100 stalks of wheat, you can sell them at the "shop" at the bottom of the screen.

The "seeds" monster increases the repetition count for your "planting" button.

This was just an experiment in doing a farming type game. It could be expanded by adding different kinds of seeds and crops. The trouble is there's no display for the number of crops you've harvested. You just have to walk to the "store" and see if it's enough to win.

Choose your umm... choice.

This game starts with three options on the screen: Rock, Paper, and Scissors. Your character is an arrow. Move to one of the three choices, and you're taken to a "Wait" screen which displays your choice while some fancy stuff happens in the background. Soon, a screen appears telling you if you have either won, lost, or tied.

The fancy stuff that makes this work is similar to the mechanics used in the game "Roll The Dice". When you choose either Rock, Paper, or Scissors, you're sent to a "Wait" level where the background and character are all gray.
When the level loads, the character moves to the right, and is pulled along a tunnel. The tunnel has several "gates" made up of rapidly changing blocks which either pull the character up or down, depending on what state the block was in when you first touched it. After passing through several "gates", the character ends up on one of the multiple exits. Which exit you land on determines the choice of the computer "player". Then the character is sent to a screen that shows the computer's choice and says "Win", "Lose", or "Tie". There are three different "Wait" screens, one for each choice.
}}The third of three Foxy games. This reverses the pragmatism of Fox World by proposing an even less likely genre for the Foxy Dimensions cast and resources: a party game.

After the pragmatism of Fox World, John Brandon took back the reins from his brother Robert and steered back toward the horizon of wild ambition. And how.

As Robert did with the previous game, John turned his Foxy Dimensions resources to a new task. Whereas Robert tried nobly to work the material into something possible within the available tools and engine, John chose an even wilder target than before: a competitive party game, in the vein of Mario Party.

The basic framework is a board game, whereby landing on certain squares under certain conditions leads to an action-oriented mini-game. You might throw darts or play a round of whack-a-mole, or try to navigate an obstacle course. In the case of Fox Party, the games are a one-on-one fighting match (naturally enough); a side-scrolling go-cart challenge; an archery course; and a racetrack for a remote control car.

In aid of this ambition, John produced the usual high standard of material -- very appealing sprites and intruiging situations -- then trailed off in an elipsis when it came time to assemble the material. It's easy to see why; there's no clear way to make this game work. Oh, you could get clever. There are ways to make a die roll. There must be a way to play with counters and level transitions and some invisible trickery to allow players to take turns racking up a score. That, however, would take some high-level hackery well beyond the scope of an isolated designer. Even then, it wouldn't be quite what he intended here.

So the Foxy trilogy is complete, with three largely impractical yet fascinating experiments. Aborted as all of these plans may be, the optimism here should inspire a new way of looking at Game-Maker. No, none of these games quite work -- but, they might have. Maybe there's a way. Nothing brilliant ever came out of playing it safe, and here the Brandon brothers have blazed a new trail. Where it leads may well be up to you.

John Brandon:
: My DBZ inspired Saiyan Fox characters in a Mario Party inspired party game.

: The party aspect was never developed, and frankly would probably be impossible to develop as multiplayer/multi-character games didn't seem to be possible in GM. I think at the time I figured I could get around this by having people take turns, but that's no fun for a party game. The concept was doomed from the start.

: I mostly just wanted to work on some quirky mini games with my fox characters and have a joke with my friends.

: I started work on some mini games: archery, go karts (a side-scroller; dodge obstacles), and duel (fighting style game based on work we'd done with Foxy Dimensions). There are playable demos of each, in various stages of completion.

On January 21st 2010, Rob Brandon pseudonymously responded to a Reddit thread with a passing comment about Game-Maker. When pressed about his history with the software, he replied that all of his games were stored on a couple of defunct computers, either inaccessible or destroyed.

Over 31 months later on August 23th 2012, John Brandon commented on a YouTube clip that he had found an archive of his and his brother's old games. The next day he composed a long e-mail describing the contents of a jumbled collection of gameware files, adding up to an ostensible sixteen games. All of the games were in pieces, many of them incomplete.

Over the next five months, through regular consultation, the games were all reassembled as well as the materials would permit. The games were reconstructed or otherwise recovered on the following dates:
Choose your umm... choice.

This game starts with three options on the screen: Rock, Paper, and Scissors. Your character is an arrow. Move to one of the three choices, and the screen goes black while some fancy stuff happens. Soon, a screen appears telling you if you have either won, lost, or tied.

The fancy stuff that makes this work is similar to the mechanics used in the game "Roll The Dice". When you choose either Rock, Paper, or Scissors, you're sent to a level where the background and character are all black.

This gameplay mechanic could be expanded on in many ways, to make games with semi-randomized elements.
}}Alan Caudel's gameography is a shotgun blast of experiments; most quite ambitious, most unfinished. Although the greatest portion of these experiments is conceptual (e.g., Jet!, Adventure), some are narrative or stylistic. Palladia is the start of an ingriguing superhero-themed game, apparently based on one of Caudel's comic book ideas.

The player controls a muscle-bound fellow in a mostly brown costume named Jackal (or perhaps it's actually a humanoid jackal, wearing a mask?), with the power to generate sparks and the ability to fly... well, more like swim through the air. The controls are rough, but promising. Not many Game-Maker games allow flight in a gravity-based side-scrolling environment.

The real star of Palladia is its environment. Level one is full of inscrutable yet memorable details, like the blood-red platforms jutting at a perspective from a dark, circuit-crossed backdrop, its blue patterns ending in dangling red uvula-like forms. Against this scene, ambiguous black silhouettes harmlessly menace the player. It's unclear what's going on here, but the scene is imaginative in its malevolence.

Level two switches tacks to present a vertical cityscape. As in a few other superhero games, Jackal can fly around the side of a building, the ocasional window broken or ajar from an apparent inferno. As Jackal flies through the billowing smoke, he leaves a trail. It's a good scenario, and immediately feels exciting to explore -- yet it's unclear quite where Caudel was going with it, as there's not much to see beyond a screen or two and not much to do within those screens.

That's the basic impression that Palladia leaves behind: a very cool, promising game that fairly well demands to be played -- yet is so early in its development that there's barely a game to play.
}}Not to be mistaken for Sherwood Forest Software's Robo Wars.

With Robo-Wars, Alan Caudel demonstrates then abandons a promising and original design before it really even gets started. Caudel is known for his scattershot experiments, pushing Game-Maker's potential a bit at a time and then moving on once he has learned what he set out to. Usually that knowledge turns up again, refined and restyled, in the context of a more ambitious project.

Robo-Wars doesn't quite fit the pattern, as what he has here is less revolutionary than it is simply interesting. It's not a template for later developments; it's just a neat game that, it would seem, never went anywhere.

What we basically have here is a side-scrolling shooter with Robotron-style controls (already a great fit for Game-Maker, only seldom used) and unusual gravity effects. Instead of using Game-Maker's built in gravity properties, Caudel has the character slowly idle downward -- a process that can be reversed through regular use of thrusters.

Already the basic mechanics are sort of neat. What really sells the package, though, is the presentation. Visually, mixes geometric shapes; strong, solid colors with just a little shading; and sparse architecture. The effect is very clean, very bold, resembling a late-1980s arcade game. The game's one level is also distinguished by some interesting destructible terrain -- though RSD's characteristic "bumpy monster" syndrome dampens the effect somewhat.

Robo-Wars is a good start of something. There's not enough game here to know quite how it would have played out, but its snapshot of a world and its way of navigating that terrain echo with suggestion of what might have been.

(From Alan Caudel) I think the original idea was to have a one-on-one player vs. computer almost-fighting-game. I was frustrated at the inability to make a fighting game (Street Fighter 2 may have been big around that time). So I set out to make the enemy take many hits to destroy, and its behavior would change after each time it took damage. Not quite a fighting game, but it could have been interesting.

(From Alan Caudel) I think the original idea was to have a one-on-one player vs. computer almost fighting game. I was frustrated at the inability to make a fighting game (Street Fighter 2 may have been big around that time). So I set out to make the enemy take many hits to destroy, and its behavior would change after each time it took damage. Not quite a fighting game, but it could have been interesting.

When the game starts, and you see a code written on the wall, and a panel next to it. Notice that the code and the panel have the same letter over it. That means code "A" goes with panel "A".

When you walk to the panel, you are shown three numbers, which you must change to match the code. Once you do, a path opens up for you to move on to the next area.

The next area shows panel "B", but it doesn't show a code. It does show the same letter "B" and it says "F5". If you press F5, you get a prompt to save your game. (A good idea is to give the saved game the name of the letter above the "F5" on the wall. In this case, you could name your saved game "B".)

Once you've saved your game, you can move to the right. Once you walked to the right, you'll see a code marked "B", but you'll discover that you can't walk left back to the panel! Touching the flashing red area will kill your character. But if you notice, on the wall there is written "F6". with a "B" over it. This is letting you know to press F6 and load the game titled "B". When you load saved game "B", you will be back at the panel and you can enter the code.

As the game progresses, the puzzles get more non-linear and more tricky. If you use the wrong code with a panel that doesn't have the matching letter above it, the code won't work! Remember to save new game states in different slots, so you don't erase old game states! Re-trace your steps, and try to find the correct path to solve the Timecode!

-----

From the author:

The inspiration for this came from 2 places: Minecraft and Nightcrawler from the X-Men. I was playing Minecraft on a friend's multiplayer server. They had teleportation enabled. You just had to enter in the coordinates you wanted to go to, and press enter. This was great except for one thing. If you typed in the wrong coordinates, you could find yourself accidentally teleported to the middle of a mountain, buried underneath the rocks or at the bottom of the ocean. It became clear how important it was to write down coordinates of safe locations, and only teleport to them. This reminded me of something I read in an X-Men comic, where someone asked Nightcrawler how he can teleport safely, and not end up in the middle of a wall or something. He responded something like, "Don't teleport where you haven't been." This got me thinking about a time travel device that can only travel to points in space and time where it has already been before. It would essentially be like saving and loading a game. This got me thinking about Game-Maker's Save/Load function. People have debated the ability to save/load games at any point vs. requiring the player to reach a "save point". Some people think that saving and loading a game at any point is almost like cheating. With Game-Maker, you don't have the choice to remove the Save/Load function, so I decided to go the "It's A Feature" route, and make the save/load function an integral part of the game. I thought instead of using it to retry areas you messed up on, why not design levels that can't be passed unless you save & load your game at different points. This got me thinking about the awesome things Mike Perrucci did in his game Wordlock. I tried to copy what he did there to make the code entry panel. Once I had that, it all came down to planning out a set of non-linear levels, which gradually introduced the concepts of the game. Part A introduces the code and the panel. Part B introduces the need to save and load the game. Parts C-E are all about solving non-linear puzzles.

This is an experiment in dual gravity games inspired by Metal Storm and VVVVVV.

Press up to make gravity pull you up, and press down to make gravity pull you down.

Here's how this technique works. The normal background blocks don't have any gravity. But on the end of each ledge, there is a gravity block that pulls you either toward the roof or the floor. If you move left or right, you move normally with no momentum. If you press up or down, you move quickly with momentum. This gives the effect of gravity pulling you in that direction.

This is an experiment in creating a stealth game in Game-Maker. The point is to avoid detection by the guards and searchlight. The character has no attack ability.

Use the numeric keypad to control the character.

4 & 6 = Walk Left & Right

1 & 3 = Sneak Left & Right

2 = Hide

The first guard is sleeping. If you walk normally, the sound of your footsteps will wake him up. So, you need to sneak by him. This effect was done by making the character's walk animation shoot out small "footstep" monsters that blend in with the background. If they hit the guard, he wakes up and hurts you. If you sneak by, you don't shoot out the footstep monsters and the guard stays asleep and doesn't hurt you.

The second guard is already awake, and on patrol. If he walks your way, hide in the shadows until he passes. This effect was done by simply making the character turn clear when you hold down the 2 key. Simple enough.

A newer version of the game includes a searchlight. This was done with a complex background animation using multiple blocks. The light turns on, and after a brief moment, it turns to the right, and then turns off. When the light starts its move from left to right, it shoots out a monster that blends in with the background, and moves to the right matching the animation. So you have to walk by when the light is off, then you have a brief moment when the light turns on to hide before you get hit. If your character is visible when the light is moving, you get hit by the monster.
This is an experiment in creating a stealth game in Game-Maker. The point is to avoid detection by the guards and searchlight. The character has no attack ability.

Use the numeric keypad to control the character.

4 & 6 = Walk Left & Right

1 & 3 = Sneak Left & Right

2 = Hide

If your character is visible when the light is moving, you get hit by the monster. So you have to walk by when the light is off, then you have a brief moment when the light turns on to hide before you get hit.
